Parents for Public Schools Announces New Board Members

Parents for Public Schools (PPS) is pleased to announce four new national board members, whose terms began July 2015. These new board members join others as the governing body of the national organization, which includes 17 chapters in 12 states. They bring an impressive record of engagement and activism in their local communities and with PPS.

Anthony Herbert, Sr., a product of public schools, has also served his entire adult life in roles directly related to public education including, among others, teacher, consultant, and mentor. An acknowledged problem solver in his school district, Anthony is currently employed as the Director of Transportation for the Pascagoula-Gautier School District and will, once again, serve as a high school principal this fall. A 2011 PPS PLI grad, Anthony has been actively involved with PPS work since attending monthly Mississippi Gulf Coast PPS Lunch Bunch in 2010-11 school year. He and his wife, Kimberly, have two children both students in the Ocean Springs public schools.

Kathy Herring is a founding member of the PPS of Pitt County, NC chapter. Kathy has been a public education advocate for ten years with increasing involvement at the school, PTA and district level. With twenty-plus years of experience including fund development, grant-writing, marketing, and public relations, she currently serves as Legislative Researcher for the Chambers of Commerce of NC East Alliance, contracting with regional chambers of commerce to research and develop legislative agenda. Married to Doug Gomes, Kathy has three children enrolled in Pitt County public schools.

Lora Evans is a graduate of the 2009 PPS Parent Leadership Institute (PLI) class. Lora was instrumental in the establishment and development of the PPS of Greenwood & Leflore County chapter. A product of public schools, she “felt it her duty to give back.” After moving back Mississippi in 1995, Lora assisted with starting her church’s first tutorial program, became active on the Education Committee of the local Chamber of Commerce, and more recently served on the Greenwood Public Schools School Board. Currently the Managed Care Director at the Greenwood Leflore Hospital, she serves as Executive Director of the Delta Hills Health Corporation (PHO) overseeing operations. Lora and her husband, Larry, are the parents of 13-year old twins.

Marcia Futel joined the PLI class of 2008. Since becoming a member of PPS of Greater Cincinnati (PPSGC) in 2009 she has served in numerous capacities, including Chapter President and representing PPSGC on the Cincinnati Public Schools Family and Community Engagement Team and Budget Commission and the Cincinnati Education Justice Coalition. A licensed financial service representative, Marcia and her husband are owners of Chuck Futel & Associates d/b/a Primerica. They are the parents of two children, both public school graduates.

PPS National Executive Director Dr. Catherine Cushinberry said, “PPS is fortunate to have these four talented, passionate professionals on our national board. I know how important strong board leadership is to the success of PPS. Anthony, Kathy, Lora, and Marcia bring added value to our already impressive group of board leaders.”
