Parents for Public Schools Announces New Executive Director

Jackson, MS (MAY 31, 2017) The National Board of Directors of Parents for Public Schools, proudly announces that Nita Rudy has been selected as the new National Executive Director of Parents for Public Schools (PPS), located in Jackson, MS.   “Nita’s commitment to families and public schools, her exceptional leadership, and creativity will continue to promote the Parents for Public Schools mission to advance the roles of families and communities in securing a high quality public education for every child”, said Steve Calloway, Board President.

Nita has a long history with PPS, originally working as a consultant in 2003 to establish parent leadership programs at PPS chapters in Jackson, Waco and Cincinnati.  Since 2011 she has been the Director of Programs and Training where she managed Schoolhouse to Statehouse a statewide effort to increase parental engagement and strengthen Mississippi public schools.  As part of the program, PPS has parent coaches working in different regions of the state who organize parents, provide leadership training, and work with local school administrators, business and civic leaders to improve local schools and school districts. “There has never been a more important time to be supporting parents, teachers, and public schools.  The Parents for Public Schools vision of a nation where families and communities are actively engaged in strengthening public schools for every child is a vision I share,” said Nita.

Understanding that parent engagement is a continuum from early childhood through career readiness, Nita developed an early childhood parent engagement program (ECD PEP), a K-12 parent engagement program (PEP) and a dual generation program preparing parents and students for high school graduation and career success (Graduation Ready).  Nita has served on school improvement committees and site based councils as well as participated in school planning reviews at the district level.  She has facilitated district strategic planning, worked on state wide education initiatives and served on scholastic audit teams.  Nita was nationally recognized by the Harvard Family Research Project for her work to help parents understand data and believes that parents can understand data and use that information to help build strong public schools.

Prior to joining PPS, Nita worked for seven years with the Center for Parent Leadership and the Prichard Committee based in Lexington, Kentucky, where she assisted community based education groups developing and running parent leadership programs in eleven states.  Her work with foundations, school districts and parent information resources centers throughout the nation has helped raise awareness of the importance of parent involvement in improving student achievement.

She is a graduate of Western Kentucky University and resides in Brandon, Mississippi.  To reach Nita Rudy or learn more about PPS call 800-880-1222 or e-mail
