San Diego-Area Students Win ‘What I Love About My Public School’ Video Contest
A team of students from Torrey Pines High School, near San Diego, has won first prize and $1,000 for their video in Parents for Public Schools' national "What I Love About My Public School" online contest. Led by Kevin Shanmugam, the team included students Andrew Burgess, Chris Puttkamer, Andrea Popescu and Danny Galuppo. See all of the top videos here.
Three national runners-up won $300 each: Houston parent Chrysi Polydoros, Mississippi teacher Matthew Gioia and Mississippi parent Josh Parker.
The judges were Claiborne Barksdale, CEO of The Barksdale Reading Institute, Oxford, Miss.; Cheryl Williams, executive director of The Learning First Alliance, Washington, D.C.; Betsy Cavendish, executive director, Appleseed, Washington, D.C.; Lane Russell, senior director of community engagement, America's Promise Alliance, Washington, D.C.; and Amber Fulton, director of programs and development, Friends of Texas Public Schools, Plano, Texas.
